Androgynising surgery is something that’s talked about a lot less than other forms of transgender or non-binary surgical options, but nonetheless; it can still be an important aspect of a person’s journey and is well worth a mention. Depending on a person’s location, budget, insurance, healthcare provider and more, there will be a huge variety to the options available to any given person, but the aim is approximately the same: to make a person’s body more androgynous in order to align better with their gender identity (or lack of).
IMPORTANT This section does not list any specific surgeries. This is because many masculinising and feminising surgeries could also be applicable to a person looking to androgynise their appearance and therefore, such procedures are already described in their own sections. See Feminising Surgery / Masculinising Surgery for more information.
Because there is some overlap, in this section we refer to one specific branch of surgical intervention that is not mentioned elsewhere, known as “genital nullification”.
What Is Genital Nullification?
Genital nullification is a procedure intended to reduce the appearance of outward facing genitalia. Depending on a person’s biology, this could be a blend of many surgical techniques that are brought together to provide the specific results, based on a person’s wants and needs. Whether a person is starting from a masculine or feminine presenting starting point will be a large determinant in the surgical options available.
A person seeking genital nullification surgery would need to work closely with their medical provider, in order not only to plan for the most satisfying results possible, but to properly assess the risks and benefits of each procedure available to them.
Additional Considerations
Because genital nullification describes an extensive set of rare and specialised procedures, it comes with a huge variety of options. As always, if a person has any specific questions or concerns regarding their health, it is important to voice these with their healthcare provider.
