Direct transphobia refers to hateful behaviour coming from an individual, directly towards and transgender individual or group.
What Can Direct Transphobia Look Like?
Probably the most obvious kind of transphobia to spot, direct transphobia is noted by a person being quite vocal about their feelings of distaste towards transgender people.
This can manifest itself in many ways, but could include:
- Slurs:
The use of offensive language towards trans people or groups. - Hate Crime:
A person may directly attack a trans person or group by means of assault. - Sexual Assult:
Being less understood and isolated, transgender people are at significanltly higher risk of sexual assault. Exclusionary policy may exacerbate this. more
Almost all transgender people have been called slurs or been subject to bullying for being transgender, at some point in their life.
What Can We All Do?
- Provide emotional support for transgender people facing hateful behaviour.
- If someone is in immediate danger, call 999.
- Ensure that hate crimes are properly reported as such.
- Speak out against violence and hateful behaviour wherever it is safe to do so.
